Remembering- Lesson notes

Introduction:

Last week we talked about the ever present being within us. The divine light that is constant and forever. It is a place to come home and it holds everything we need. It will always be there, even when we feel unworthy or lost. And in yoga, it is taught that it is the forgetting or the severing from that, that causes suffering. That makes us not feel enough, has us seek for things to soothe or help us feel as though we belong. 

And we all forget. We all get small, and stop trusting our innate goodness. And stop trusting the innate goodness in others. Our conditioning tells us we are separate, that perceptions, thoughts and material things define us. That we are falling short, in our work, our appearance, our relationships. Or other people are letting us down, or that they need to change. 

In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras (2.4), he talks about avidya, which means not seeing. Forgetting. And we can practice remembering. Seeing the goodness in others and drawing inwards, to see that within us is where we find love, hope and joy.  

But we get busy. We get distracted. And we forget. We move through our day from thing to thing, planning the next and the next. So today we’ll practice pausing and remembering. Each time we switch between positions, we’ll take a minute to pause and be mindful. And in life we can do that too. Before we get out of the car, as we sit down to eat a meal, just as we finish getting dressed. It may only be a split second, or enough time to take a breath but it really can make all the difference by helping us come home to what we know, and to nurture the goodness in our hearts.
